Department of Trade and IndustrySubject: DTI Web Page: Timeshare Guide AnnexIn October 2000 I reviewed the UK's DTI web site. There were some remarks about the value of second-hand timeshare which seemed to imply that second hand was not as good as first hand. This of course is nonsense since all units should be of similar standard. I took this up with the DTI, who thanked me for pointing out their mistake and said they will arrange for the error to be rectified.Date: Wed, 1 Nov 2000 17:26:18 Dear Alan, Thank you for your recent message pointing out the typing error in the money back guarantee question contained in the Annex. I will arrange for the error to be rectified. The statement about second hand timeshare in this answer is intended to point out the difference in value of second hand timeshare compare to new timeshare. It is not intended to be a statement about the standard of accommodation involved. People who buy new timeshare, then realise they may have made a mistake and want to resell, usually find the price differential between new and second hand quite surprising. We think it important to make potential buyers aware that they could lose a lot of money if they wish to resell almost immediately (all the more reason to consider the purchase more carefully before committing themselves). If you think the statement could be made clearer, I'd welcome any suggestions you may have to help us achieve this. Your sincerely, mailtopaul.rigby@dti.gsi.gov.uk DTI Consumer Affairs Directorate Mr Rigby has a fair point, but at the same time he might make similar remarks about new cars, and new shoes. That is, if a person tried to resell these items privately almost immediately the resell price obtainable would be far below what was originally paid.
