Frequently Asked Timeshare Questions

Answers

  • I bought a three year membership of RCI, but I don't need it anymore. Can I get a refund?
This should be possible. Email their customer services quoting your full membership number, name and address.

  • I am new to timeshare. Can you explain how the week numbers work?
Week 1 is generally the first week in January, and week 52 the last one in December. Change over days vary from resort to resort, so the actual start of your week will be determined by the resort you visit. The exchange organisations will advise you of the start date of any exchange you enter into. If you opt to exchange privately you should get the precise details from the person you are exchanging with. Since 365 and 366 days is not exactly divisible by 7, the start date of each week varies from year to year even if your start day does not. In fact, if you own week 52 at some resorts, they will offer you week 53 when there is a 53rd week in the year.

  • What or who is TimeshareUK.com?
TimeshareUK.com is the Web site name owned by Alan D Winter (UK resident). TimeshareUK.com is not connected by way of trade to any other timeshare organisation, or exchange club, except of course via a hyperlink. The Trading name Timeshare UK (with a space in it) is a part of the ABTI group and has nothing whatsoever to do with TimeshareUK.com

  • What's the point of this website?
This website has its origins in a university thesis on timeshare resales. The rest is icing on the cake.

  • You don't seem to affliate to RCI, II, Timeshare Council or Timeshare Consumers Association. Why not?
TimeshareUK.com owns no resorts, so there seems no point in affliating to an exchange organisation. We do link to a wide range of exchange organisations and you can make your own mind up about them. TimeshareUK.com offers information about timeshare but is a not trading as such so there appears to be no need to belong to a trade association. There are links to a number of trade associations and you can make your own mind up about them.

  • I have a RCI affiliated timeshare in INDIA near Bangalore, I would like to sell / rent the same. How should I go about it.

  • Timeshare purchased years ago, sold at a considerable loss. Can the loss be used to offset capital gains for CGT purposes?
Assuming the timeshare was a licence to occupy the premises for one week a year, this represents a saleable asset which brings into play CGT legislation. Timeshare in perpetuity is not considered a wasting asset. It therefore seems that any capital loss could be offset against other gains. Capital loss is difference between proceeds received, net of costs and the original cost, inclusive of legal fees. If a gross loss was realised, then the indexation allowance need not be considered.

  • Should I pay to advertise with XYZ company?

Could you comment on whether the following company is a reputable and legal service network for reselling timeshares: ??????????????????????????????
Also, what is the average days on market it normally takes to resell a timeshare (i.e., Resort in Cancun, Mexico) and are there any hidden issues a seller should be aware of?

Fern Modena (used to run timeshare-guru.com) Replies: Do not pay "upfront fees" to sell a timeshare. If they ask for an "appraisal fee" it is another up front fee, you don't need one to sell a timeshare. You might try selling through an ad in Timesharing Today or Timeshare Users Group. There are also many reliable brokers. I have a web page which lists links to these and Timesharing Today and TUG. You also might try an ad in one of the major metropolitan newspapers near where you live.
