London Bus Information - THE GUIDE

One day travelcards are a good purchase, from 9.30 Monday to Friday, all weekend, and public holidays. These allow unlimited travel for specified zoned areas, and can be used on the Undergroud British Rail, or buses.Note: Not for use on night buses.

Bus Tours of London

Several companies offer tours around central London, each offering a 24 hour ticket, hop-on-hop-off service. In each case you should guard your ticket lest you not be re- admitted to their tour buses.

All routes depart from various points around the capital, for example from Marble Arch at exit 4 of the pedestrian underground system. Each company offers a variety of different routes to take in all the main sights. Be sure to obtain a leaflet for each company before deciding which tour to take. Maps and places of interest are marked on each company's information leaflet. There are a frequent number of buses coming and going to hop on and off of. Observations seem to indicate London Pride as having fewer buses than the other two, so you may be kept hanging around a bit. Language tours are available, spoken commentary in English, headphones for most foreign languages.
Look out for discounts on London attractions available when you purchase the bus tour tickets, or on presentation of your tour bus ticket at the place you are visiting.

RP Rickman - Nashville, TN

I paid my money, and boarded one of those famous double-decker models, which was modified for touring; the roof was cut-off, thus allowing the tourists to see everything. Having a live person pointing-out landmarks has two advantages.

First, he or she would keep up with the traffic and actually point to the landmarks of interest before they disappeared, while a recording on the other hand, could get out of sync with what was actually passing by.

Second, a person has a personality. For example, "To your right, is a garden (park) which was built to symbolise the friendship between France and England. As you can see, it's a very small garden."

There were three separate routes, serviced by several buses. I could get on or off when I pleased at numerous stops, and could use the service for twenty-four hours from the time I bought the ticket.

So, around and around I went that afternoon and saw most of the important sites of London in a very short period of time.

Fill in the blank: "On your right is_________ where that unfortunate incident occurred in 1780 when Prince_______ was found to be________ with_______ and both were imprisoned in The Tower of London."

Or, "We are now approaching the_______ which is where Henry the ______ was rumoured to have_________ with his first wife."

And "If you look quickly to the left as we make the turn you will see the statue of _____ between the two lower windows, he was later beheaded."

Around and around we all went, through the traffic of London, over London Bridge, past The London Dungeon, over Tower Bridge (I quickly snapped a picture from below), past The Tower of London, and around and around the city.

It was a good introduction to London, but very little that I saw and heard stuck in my mind. Yet it was worth the price because it gave me some idea of the huge expanse of the city, roughly where the landmarks were, and it stimulated me to visit some of the places I saw.

Late in the afternoon I was sunburned (in London of all places!) and suffering from mental indigestion aggravated by exhaust fumes.

The massive Victoria Coach Station came into view, for the second or third time, and I stepped off the bus.

We have a few big railroad stations in the USA, but Victoria Coach Station is more the railroad equivalent of O' Hare International Airport: it is massive, with tracks leading everywhere and all enclosed in a greenhouse type of roof.
