The London Underground
No one gets lost on the oldest underground transport system in the world. Maps are found all over the network. It is the way to get from A to B across London. Buy tickets before boarding or face a possible fine. Some unwritten rules include- Walking on the left down corridors,
- Standing only on the right hand side when using escalators (this allows others to walk up or down on the left hand side).
Avoid rush hours unless you enjoy sweaty armpits in your face, and the increased opportunity for pickpockets. Be aware that gangs (and police trying to observe them) operate to jog passengers, to enable a gang member to lift valuables from the unsuspecting.
Be aware of perverts who press too close to women.
Peak times are 8am to 10am and 5pm to 7pm.
One day travelcards are a good purchase, from 9.30 Monday to Friday, all weekend, and public holidays. These allow unlimited travel for specified zoned areas, and can be used on the Undergroud British Rail, or buses.Note: Not for use on night buses.
