Lagos de Fanabe

Click to read
(1)We have just returned from two weeks at Lagos de Fanabe, Tenerife (24.12.04 - 7.1.05). We have stayed at this resort before and as far as we can see nothing has changed in this time.

The resort is approximately 15 years old and although the grounds are well kept and the pool area picturesque the rooms are in need of refurbishment. There is no air conditioning and the apartment we had did not have a ceiling fan (some do).

The weather was not hot enough at this time of year, but in peak time, I think it would be a problem. In fact, because the room did not get any sun, it was quite cold in the morning and evenings.

We were on the first floor overlooking the pool in room 2105 not far from reception. This is mainly a timeshare resort, although there seemed to be tour operators operating in the resort, mainly for non UK operators.

The reception staff were always willing to help and the apartments were cleaned 6 times a week with clean towels daily and bedding changed 3 times per week. The apartment had adequate utensils for 4 people. The one bedded apartments were not really suitable for more than 2 people, although 2 children could sleep in the lounge as the sofa converted into a double bed.

We were given a courtesy room on our last day that had two beds, but only one bathroom. The resort does not have rooms with two bathroom and does not have any entertainment or children's clubs.

There is an on-site restaurant for half board guests as well as a pool bar. We did not use either on this visit. The location of the apartments is excellent and is minutes from shops, restaurants and bars.

There is a good bar called “The Colonial” - turn right towards the sea for a couple of yards and you can’t miss it. It looks a little scruffy from outside, but inside it is very friendly and the atmosphere is good. The owner is called “Nick” and he is very liberal with the measures he serves. We found a very good restaurant in the next block - next to the Sun Palace apartments called “Coer de Filet”. Although slightly higher in price than many of the other restaurants, we ate here many times and did not have any complaints . The service was good and staff very friendly and welcoming.

The beach is only minutes away and is black sand with some good beach bars and sun beds for hire. There is a promenade that goes all the way to Los Christianos if you turn left and to a lovely little fishing village called La Caleta if you turn right.

La Caleta is well worth the walk and it has some very good fish restaurants and also passes through the up market El Duque area. This area is vastly different to Playa del las Americas or Los Christianos. Although the resort is situated in what is described as the quieter end, it has more than enough to do, and you can always take a short taxi ride into the centre of town if you want the discos and nightlife of Playa del las Americas.

Taxi’s are cheap and plentiful and are at the top of the road. The price one way from the airport is no more than 20 Euro.

If you like hiking there are plenty of wonderful walks to be had close by. BARRANCO DEL INFERNO - village of Adeje and not to be missed. There is a very good restaurant situated at the start and end of the walk called Otello II and serves the mouth-watering garlic chicken, Canarian potations and Mojo Sauce (speciality of the island). Another good hike is from Masca and the walk down to the sea from the village. Both excellent. There are numerous other walks all over the island and the scenery is spectacular in places. Obviously Mount Teide is a trip not to be missed. Puerto del la Cruz on the northern side is also worth a visit and is not a purpose built resort like many in the south. All in all a good vacation.

(2)From: Helen D (as reported to sunterra members group on Oct 13, 2003

We have just returned from a one bedroomed apartment in Lagos de Fanabe, Tenerife. It is a II resort and not a patch on even the worst GVC resort we have ever been in. When we arrived the taxi dropped us off on the main road and we had to walk down a relatively steep hill to Reception with our cases. When we were allocated our apartment we had to climb back up the hill - about half way. The apartment had a fan in the living room but none in the bedroom, although you could hire one from reception if you wanted. The apartment was in need of a good make over - it looked very tired, although it was cleaned everyday except Saturday. The rooms were very small. The cooker and fridge had signs of rust on the doors, but as I have said they were clean. I would not choose to go back to the resort again. There were some good points in that it was very convenient for small shops and restaurants and there was a very good Commission Free exchange bureau about 100 yds away - I think it was called Adventureland. I cannot comment on the other apartments, only no.1097 - its biggest plus was that it overlooked the pools of which there were 2 and got the sun most of the afternoon and early evening.

2nd report

From: pamwbk...
We have also just returned from this resort and found the apartment was so disgusting and in dreadful need of repair that we have put an official complaint in.

The apartment was very cramped (2032), the fridge did not work (replaced 2 days before we were due to leave!), the patio doors needed fixing, the bathroom cupboard was rotten with mould, the roof terrace steps were not fixed and dangerous, there were other things wrong that I won't bore you with. Yes the apartment was cleaned every day, however the roof terrace was filthy all week. The location was excellent. The weather fabulous. The restaurants brilliant and the GVC (oops! Sunterra) staff at RSBC were great.,p>
All in all we did not let the apartment spoil our holiday.

The Moness Country Club

Click to read
Resort Facilities:-Superb Farragon Restaurant,-Cafe/bistro bar, -Snooker room & Games room, -Swimming Pool, -Putting Green. The resort makes a great base for exploring this beautiful part of the world. Pitlochry, Dunkeld, Kenmore & Killin are all within a short drive of the resort. The Highlands of Scotland are on the doorstep and if you like walking, there are so many Monroes within a short drive that it will take you years to do them all. Of course, if fishing or golf is your thing then Perthshire is probably the best place in the world to be. If all of that sounds too much for you then why not just sit on your private balcony and admire your own panoramic view over Aberfeldy and its valley. This property is also great for exchange purposes and Moness is affiliated to both RCI and Dial-an-Exchange.

California Beach resort (costa del sol)

Click to read
Stayed at California Beach resort (costa del sol), for my first free week, Joined last year. Best holiday I've ever had, 6* accomodation, you can also see where the maintenance fees go, I would advise all not to buy the points at resort or at least "haggle", and wait for the "home visit" much cheaper!!! All in all if you like holidays I would say go for it, if you can afford it. S Lancaster 29 May2004

Le Manoir

Click to read
We stayed at Le Manoir in August this year for a week so we don't have direct experience of the accommodation at the Residence although I believe understand it is "not as good" as Le Manoir (and that isn't great!).

Guess it depends on what you're looking for in a holiday but there's not a lot to do around the resort and there was certainly no activities when we were there (apart from the Monster Club - 16 is a bit old for that!).

Le Manoir has an outdoor pool and a table-tennis table, tennis courts and a children's play area. An indoor pool with sauna and jacuzzi (which was very mucky by the end of the week as I think they only clean it out once a week).

Be prepared to have to travel (by car) to shop or eat as, apart from a very average "restaurant" opposite the resort and the very expensive (I believe although we didn't try it) restaurant at the hotel next door there is nothing within walking distance.

The nearest local shop (sells the basics) is open on a Sunday until 2:00pm (I think) but apart from that you'll be lucky to find anything else open (including restaurants). Le Manoir does sell some very basic provisions from reception (long life milk, cornflakes and a few tins).

On the restaurant front always book in advance as they open only if they know they've got reservations.

Take mossi spray as they're pretty bad from the Seine and if you don't like spiders don't even go there - We've never seen so many!

Have I put you off enough? Sorry. Like I said, it depends what you want out of a holiday. Some of the guests we spoke to love it but for us it was too much like hard work for a holiday!

Palazzo

Click to read
They will certainly charge you for electricity, its a standard 16 euros per week. Palazzo Catalani is situated at Soriano nel Cimino ( a hill top town / village, pop 8000 ) which is about a hours drive from the airport. We hired a car (new 5 door Fiat Punto) via the internet from Budget which cost us £288 for 15 days. You could get there by public transport, which is very cheap, but would mean getting from the airport to the train station ( Roma Termini) and then getting a train to either Orte or Viterbo, then you could get either a taxi, bus, or local train to Soriano. Cost not known. How-ever there is not a lot to do at Soriano, so if you want to get around the local area, a car is a must. If you want to explore Rome, then a 6.80 euro ( about £5 ) return ticket from Orte station is the way to go. It lasts 24 hours and gives you free travel on the buses and the metro. If you catch the 08:01am train from Orte you will get room to park in the free car park behind the station. Any later and it gets full. You do not want to drive in the centre of Rome!!!! let alone try to find some where to park, its a nightmare. Would recommend a full day at the Vatican. The resort reception staff are extremely helpful

We had a truly wonderful time at the Palazzo Catalani - a beautifully restored building - with views to die for The staff were extremely kind - helpful, proffessional and good company who made us feel as if we were honoured guests in the Palazzo. We spent time - In Soriano at the Lake - to swim and relieve the heat, in beautiful medaieval hilltop towns at the Villa D'Este - Tivoli - stunned by the fountains and returned each night to enjoy Guiseppes wonderful food - We made some good friends and enjoyed catching up each evemning with - "What have you done today - what was it like ?" Rome was glorious - but perhaps the best thing od all was the kindness and friendliness shown to us by all the locals without exception Thankyou to the staff and to Soriano for a brilliant holiday

Atlantic view Lanzarote

We stayed at Atlantic View in 1999. It is very small and quite old. Rectangular swimming pool with two storey accommodation surrounding it. Not very imaginative! We had a two bed apartment, I think there are only two. The rest are one bedroom.

The apartment was fairly good but by no means the best we've had. No separate kitchen, just a corner of the lounge. The main bedroom had a very small en suite. The main bathroom was pretty big and the full size whirlpool bath was nice.

It was quite a steep walk up the hill from the town and there was not a lot of parking space.

The thing that made the difference was that it was a very friendly and fairly quiet place.

Dave. [sunterramembers] Digest Number 2183

2. Atlantic View in September the staff are very nice but !!!! the resort are in conflict with the very close neighbours (who have rights to the use of the pool) in regards disruptive behaviour. We also witnessed stone throwing and visits from the local police.Apart from that the resort is in our view one of the originals which requires a complete refit to bring it upto standard with gvc resorts. Cala Blanca, Grand Canaria

Click to read
Just returned from Cala Blanca. The restaurant on site is a bit hitty missy. Steaks ok. Don't have the Hake. The hotel just above Cala Blanca is excellent. EUR14 for a buffet--eat as much as you like--with lots to choose from. Very posh. Long trousers and shirt are necessary in order to gain access and tell them you are staying at the Cala Blanca and they welcome you. There is also a good restaurant down on the beach---the end nearest Cala Blanca--a superb mixed grill for two EUR21.50 (4 pieces of steak, 4 pieces of chicken, chops, beefburgers and sausages with chips and veg.). We took what we couldn't eat back to the apartment. The large Irish Bar/restaurant on the corner of a square at the harbourside in Puerto Mogan was praised by quite a few people, although we never sampled eats there.

Good Spar supermarcado on entry in Puerto Mogan. As you go over the speed restrictions marked on the road entering Puerto Mogan, take the first left and follow the road round. You will see it and just prior to it a piece of waste ground where you can park for free (on your right). Be extremely careful if you park anywhere else as there is a traffic warden who is as keen as mustard. You will see absolutely loads and loads of cars with parking tickets on. I think he really enjoys his job. A couple of people told us some of the clocks are wrong on the ticket machines and that's how they got caught out.

There is also a Spar supermacado down near the beach too that is quite large but not as cheap as the one afore mentioned.

You will enjoy Cala Blanca but--------------------------if you are in a one bedroom and have been a member for a while you will be disappointed with the accommodation; it's very small with nowhere to put anything. The tiles in the bathroom are brown with grime of ages past. If you are unlucky enough to get the new sofas and chair they are very uncomfortable (I used a patio chair as they have cushions and are far more user friendly). We, and another couple we know of, went into a kitchen with a dirty cooker plus we had the added bonus of a glass casserole dish that had been left in the oven with roasted gravy or something baked onto it. It was cleaned very quickly when I complained to reception. House keeping isn't up to par with other resorts although they do clean every day apart from Wednesdays and Sundays. Our floor was washed once in the two weeks we were there. We didn't even have a brush to sweep the floors although we did find out a couple of days prior to leaving that there should be one in every apartment.(There is no inventory) The area round the swimming pool is hosed down once a week on a Saturday.

There is a free bus that runs every day from the resort and back to both Puerto Mogan and Puerto Rico. I think it's about four to each place, starting if I'm not mistaken at 10.00 hrs., and I think the last one returns at 18.30 hrs. but can't remember which of the two is the last to run. We never used it but did book to use it on our last Friday to go to Puerto Mogan market. The bus seats 21 and there was about 50 people waiting for it. We gave up and went by car. We would have been lost without the car but there is a service bus that starts early mornings through until about 02.30 hrs. apparently. The only drawback is that you have to walk to the bottom of the hill for it and worse still walk up it upon your return. Was led to believe that taxi fares are pretty reasonable.

Although this all sounds somewhat negative we had a fantastic holiday as with it being a relatively small resort it was really friendly. We spoke to and made friends there more than any other resort we have been to.

The resort itself is extremely pretty with flowers everywhere.

The bar/restaurant staff are very friendly too. Do try the restaurant at the hotel just above Cala Blanca; you won't be disappointed.

Atlantic View, Lanzarote

Click to read
2002. It is small on two floors surrounding a pool. It is quiet and was virtually empty when we went there last new year. It is not 4* but was clean and the rooms reasonably well equipped. We have been to Puerto del Carmen previously and would say the accommodation was of a similar standard but the resort facilities were fairly sparse. An "English" restaurant and bar, which was rarely open after 8pm, although I seem to remember they had a BBQ night but we didn't go. If I remember rightly it was only about 35 points as an II exchange and I would say that was good value.

It's about 10-15 minutes walk from the port area and a bit longer to the main seafront drag. Very steep hill to the town.

Crown Resorts

Click to read
From chrisjopp. We have just returned from Crown Resorts - Club Calahonda. This is our 5th time there (we own at Club Marbella) and it won't be our last visit. Everytime we go we have a wonderful time. This year was no exception, excellent accommodation, brilliant staff, facilities brilliant and the entertainment exceptional. Club Calahonda is in the Sitio de Calahonda near Marbella, with loads of places in the area to visit and enjoy. We especially like the El Zoco shopping area which, although slightly run down looking has some of the best restaurants in the area (especially La Mandrago - a slovakian restaurant with wonderful food at reasonable prices). Close by is Puerto Cabopino, a small harbour with restaurants and apartments with a great atmosphere. We also like La Cala with its good restaurants, market and great beaches. We really do like the area and are looking forward to our next visit there. It is an RCI RID and this is well deserved. We would recommend anyone to give it a try.

El Marques, Tenerife,

Click to read
My husband and I have owned at El Marques since 1988 and have found it super. We have done quite a few exchanges but still prefer El Marques. They provide plenty of entertainment in the evenings and the staff are very helpful and friendly. During the day there are plenty of places to visit or you can just lounge by the heated swimming pool, swim, eat and drink at the on site restaurant or just stay on your balcony and soak up the views. We have wonderful views from our apartment so sometimes it is nice to just sit and stare!! kayholley@...Aug 03

Normandy Deux Amantas

Click to read
From baldyman (email address withheld), 23June03 We have just stayed at Normandy deux amantas. It was awful. It is split into two parts with old and new. Firstly the old is in a bad state of repair and needs an overhaul badly. Furniture is broken and the bathrooms are plagued with cracked tiles and thick mould around the bath. Although spacious the stairs are death traps and do not take children here or at least take your baby gate(s). The kitchen downstairs are new and excellent. In the second new part although very clean and the fabrics are good there is no room they are at best small and pokey. If you like to shower sitting down in a three quater bath (I kid you not) then this place is for you. Oh and one last point the river is teaming with frogs who love to croak loudly all night and with no air conditioning you are left with the choice of sweating or listening to the frogs all night. DO NOT GO HERE

Pearly Grey Ocean Club, Canaries

Click to read
On the south coast of Tenerife offering quite a few facilities, including its own restaurant, bar, gym, outdoor pool etc. Stayed in one of the apartments in the multi-storey block, which was OK, but some were bigger and better than others. The S1/S2 blocks are particularly good if you can get them. There's no beach to speak of, but it's quite a good spot for touring around the area and the resort is very friendly with plenty going on and a nice atmosphere. They have their own website.

Elite Apartments at Pueblo Evita

(1) We stayed at Elite Apartments at Pueblo Evita this August and my children ( triplets aged 10) really liked it. They were in the pool the whole time! Some entertainment for children was provided and they particularly enjoyed the mini Olympics in the pool. A very friendly resort, mostly British I would say. It is worth staying in the Elite apts for the air/con alone - CDS in August is very hot!

(2)We stayed at Elite Apts at Pueblo Evita in the summer of 2001 and would have no hesitation about returning there.Although we didn`t use the beach I believe there is one a short (5-10 mins) walk away. My " children" are a little older than yours (mid teens) and enjoyed spending most of their time on the spacious roof top sun terrace & pool. The 7th floor apartment we stayed in was excellent, but be warned there are no lifts although the staff are very helpful assisting with the luggage ! At the time of our visit there was some building work nearby but I would think this is now complete, & even then it was not too intrusive.
Malaga Airport iss about 15-20minutes away.
If you go to this area it`s worth a visit to Mijas, browse the shops, good choice of eating places, and we found a little cafe in the garden area near the bullring that served an excellent strawberries & ice cream for the kids--- well I get accused of being a big kid so I had two helpings!!!

Grangefield

We own here and it is a very nice resort - beautifully landscaped pools and nice apts. There is entertainment for children but it is really aimed at under 7's - my children made most of their friends in the pool! Very few of the apts have aircon, just fans in the living room and bedrooms. There is also no beach within walking distance. A car is essential really. At the moment the resort is big into selling Infiniti points - needless to say very expensive! The resort is well situated for sightseeing - we did Gib ( did a mini bus trip - children loved the apes!) but leave the car in Spain and walk across. Also Granada (fantastic but very hot!) and Seville. A trip to Fuengirola zoo is not to be missed! There are two waterparks, one in Mijas and one in Torremolinos - both good but the children preferred the one in Torremolinos - it's bigger!

Grangefield Oasis - Costa del sol.

We own here and have been 3 times in 4 years. There are two pools with plenty of sun beds (no towels at 7 O 'clock in the morning) I just wish they would clean them of debris a little more often. Our apartment is beautifully decorated and is clean. The surrounding landing is being built on (everywhere!)so there were plenty of cranes and workmen about but they made little noise. Car hire essential. Friendly staff, big push on infiniti points! try it if you can. J Turner 31May2004

Club Albufiera

Click to read
is on a main road into Albufiera. Although I supposed in theory it's walking distance to Albufiera it's not a road we would have wanted to walk. The are two restaurants just a hundred yards or so down the road, on the opposite side. We ate there 3 or 4 times during the week but didn't even enjoy walking to them!

It was very quiet at the resort when we were there - not many people there and no entertainment going on. There's a restaurant/pool bar in one area, and a snack-type bar at the other pool.

We only used the courtesy bus once but it was busy (especially when you remember how quiet the place was). I think it runs a reasonable service but not in the evenings as I recall. I think taxis are cheap enough, though

It's a nice enough resort, but we personally wouldn't choose it again. Do you know Albufiera? It's quite pretty - very busy in summer months and quiet out of season. Some of the roads are very steep.

Here some information about Walton Hall

We've been in a very comfortable 2 BD unit (6/4) in the new building attached to the main house. The view from the unit was very quite, an english garden and even some seeps far away. The resort has a nice indoor pool with sauna and Turkish bath and an outdoor pool. There was also a putting green, you could practise archery and I think you could ride, but I don't sure of this last item. The resort is situated in the middle of a large and quite park and near it you can even find some buck deers. There was a nice onsite restaurant in the ancient greenhouse.

From there we've made one days trips to Oxford (the Elizabeth was a very nice restaurant), Stratford upon Avon and Warwick Castle.

BROOME PARK

Click to read
Our room was a wide studio (2/4) with bathroom and mini kitchen. It was in the main house and decorated in an historic style very nice. My wife and I love the historic atmosphere of old buildings (Broome Park was built in XVII century) more than standard and modern hotels and enjoyed very much our stay there. The english gardens surrounding the main building were very pretty and there was a nice outdoor swimming pool (we couldn't use it in september because of the weather The main building had a pub to dinner an insipid food and also have a beautiful Eduardian style dinning room that we couldn't use because the friday (the only day it opened) we were in London. In front of the main building there was one putting green and there are also a Golf ride and Golf Club (I think you must have handicap certificate to play in)

Broome Park is close to the historic town of Canterbury (about 10 miles,10-15 min driving) and about 1 hour driving to London. Sorry, I have not any information about rail stations or timetables because I love driving (even driving a rented car by the left side of the road and astonishing when I take the window roller while trying change the speed). In any case I suppose Canterbury should have rail station and I think it should be 45 min long. You can get information on european railways at this site

I think the closest town is Canterbury but also close are Dover and its White Cliffs and the "Hell Corner", Penshurt Place, Leed Castle ... There were also some pubs in the road from Broome Park to Canterbury (I remember the "Black Horse" on the left side of the road where I taste a delicious steak and kidney pie).
