Islands
24/1/03 - A proposed change to the European Union's regional development fund would mean that 'island' will no longer simply mean a piece of land surrounded by water. Instead, an 'island':
  • must have at least 50 permanent residents;
  • must not be attached to the mainland by a rigid structure;
  • must be more than one kilometre from the mainland; and
  • cannot be home to the capital of an EU state.
This would mean that the Isle of Anglesey and several islands off Scotland, such as Bute and Skye, would no longer count as 'islands' and therefore not qualify for certain financial aid packages from the EU. 'People are dumbfounded that anyone could suggest these are not islands', Ian Gillies of the Scottish Islands Network said. 'Just try and walk there.'

Loch Rannoch - Scotland - UK

The area is beautiful and peaceful; 10 minutes walk to the village of Kinloch Rannoch where there are two shops, two garages, two Hotels and a beautiful river.
The resort has a free swimming pool 50 yards from the Lodge with Sauna and Steam Room.
50 yards the other way is the Hotel/Reception with two "dineries" and a bar. Something on in the bar most nights to entertain.
There are squash, short tennis, indoor games, dry skiing etc on the resort and more adventurous activities close by. The loch is 23 miles round. May is pre-midge-season and sometimes very nice weather.

Scottish Midges

Beware of midges if you visit Scotland in July/August/September - they bite.

Cycling in Scotland

Date:30 Mar 1998: "We have cycled in Scotland and have visited Arran, Islay, Jura, Mull, Bute, the Ardnamurchan Penninsular (access from Mull or by ferry from Glencoe). All of these places are definitely to be recommended in early June when the weather is normally very good. In all cases traffic is very light at that time of the year, and there is a good choice of accomodation (although we stayed at all times in Youth hostels). Although we did not visit the mainland by bike (except as a means of getting between ferry points) it is evident that roads to favourite places (Glencoe, Fort William etc.)can be extremely busy, in sharp contrast to the islands. I would have thoought that Skye should be avoided for the same reason, although the scenery is stunning. I can not comment personally on the Outer Hebrides, but I understand that they are very well worth visiting, but beware of a Sunday when everything closes!

" I think a good route for a holiday would be to go from Ardossan to Arran, after exploring the island, take the ferry from the north of the island to Kintyre and from there to Islay/Jura. It is possible once per week to take a ferry then from Islay to Oban (Wednesdays?) from where you could either visit Mull or return by heading south via Inverarie, possibly via the Isle of Bute, depending on your onward means of transport (we travelled by car and parked at Ardrossan when we visited Arran, and parked at Glencoe village when we visited Mull/ Oban)."

Edinburgh Festival

"Early August- start of September. Please if you want to come to the festival book your accommodation first. I run a guest house in Edinburgh and turn away so many at that time."
